AESA 2011 Executive Council Nominee

Sue Ellen Henry

I am excited about the opportunity to renew my participation in AESA leadership after being fortunate to have served as secretary from 2001-2004. Having regularly attended the annual meeting since 1997, I have seen this organization grow and change; it remains a mainstay of my intellectual inspiration. Prior to my graduate work at the University of Virginia, I was a university administrator and worked at several institutions around the country. Currently I am an associate professor of education at Bucknell University, where I teach writing-intensive courses in social foundations, multiculturalism, democracy and education, as well as supervise elementary student teachers. My scholarly interests are focused on understanding the influence of social class status on young children’s use of their bodies (gestures, movements) in school. My earlier work examined constructing moral environments in schools and pedagogy in the social foundations and multiculturalism classroom. This work has been published in Educational Theory and Educational Studies (on which I serve as a member of the editorial advisory board), and I recently published a chapter on pragmatism and motherhood in Motherhood: The Birth of Wisdom, for the Blackwell Philosophy for Everyone series. Beyond these professional commitments, I am the mother of three children, love camping with my family, and enjoy riding horses.
