Barbara Applebaum is an associate professor in Cultural Foundations of Education at Syracuse University whose training is in philosophy of education but whose research and teaching is interdisciplinary in nature. Her academic interests focus on the point where ethics, education, and commitments to diversity converge. Her recent research is heavily informed by feminist philosophy (and Judith Butler?s recent work, in particular), critical race theory and critical whiteness studies. She has published extensively and her book, Being White/Being Good: White Complicity, Responsibility and Social Justice Education (2010, Lexington Books) is a winner of the 2011 AESA Critics? Choice Award. As a possible member of the AESA Executive Council, she would seek to recruit new members to AESA who are doing cutting edge work around social justice and education and help keep the organization growing.
